By James W. Cornman (auth.)

This publication is a manuscript that was once almost entire while James W. Cornman died. many of the chapters have been in ultimate shape, and all however the final were revised by means of the writer. The final bankruptcy used to be in handwritten shape, and the concluding feedback weren't entire. Swain took cost of the proofreading and John L. Thomas compiled the indices with the help of Lehrer. it's our opinion that this manuscript, just like the different books Cornman released, is one in all unprecedented scholarly and philo sophical significance. As do all of his philosophical guides, this paintings displays Cornman's nice love for philosophy and his dedication to the hunt for fact. each severe scholar and writer of epistemology will take advantage of and recognize the thorough scholarship and rigorous argumentation they are going to locate herein. it's been our privilege to partici pate within the training of the manuscript for the philosophical public. KEITH LEHRER MARSHALL SWAIN IX advent advent TO EPISTEMOLOGICAL SKEPTICISM Many philosophers attempt to refute skepticism, yet few attempt to provide an actual characterization of the thesis they assault. My first target, accordingly, is to signify skepticism, or, extra accurately, numerous species of skepticism. Then I shall decide upon these species I desire to examine and justify my selection. to start, permit me distinguish what I shall name "epistemological skepticism" from the thesis I shall name "ontological nihilism" and from what's believed via a person whom I shall name an "ontological skeptic".

It is, again, clear that I can do this only after I have the theory available in detail and examine its consequences about which statements are acceptable in a variety of situations. In this case, we must wait until after Chapter 9, where the theory is applied to several specific situations. But, a short preview may be of some help. The situation in which we shall find ourselves at the end of Chapter 9 will resemble that one we have found confronting the attempts to vindicate the straight rule for enumerative induction.

A similar argument is proposed by Unger. He claims to have defended skepticism by showing that: each of two propositions deserves, if not our acceptance, at least the suspension of our judgment: That, in the case of every human being, there is hardly anything, if anything at all of which he is certain. That (as a matter of necessity), in the case of every human being, the person knows something only if he is certain of it. 3 As it stands, this argument is no more relevant to moderatel skepticism than Lehrer's argument.

Thus, I conclude, we are justified in applying CP to theories of empirical justification. But, of course, we also must find some way to justify the appropriate instantiation for 'TI' in the antecedent of CPo Preview of the Explanatory Foundational Theory as Most Reasonable Because Conservative At this early stage in the discussion, I can do little more than state which theory of empirical justification instantiates the antecedent of CPo It will only be after Chapter 7, where I develop the explanatory foundational theory in detail, that I shall be ready to argue that it is as reasonable as any theory of justification which provides the means for achieving the goal of making moral decisions, effectively and efficiently.
