Following this beginning, Grisham gradually reveals what has led to Danilo Silva’s capture and torture. These events, of course, take place back in the United States and involve Silva’s original identity as Patrick Lanigan. In The Partner, Grisham uses a tried-and-true method of organizing chapters. As he has done in all his novels, he breaks each of The Partner’s chapters, 43 in all, into several short episodes, each advancing the action and increasing suspense. In The Partner, however, episodes do not contain material as disparate as the material in novels such as The Client in which Grisham develops four related plot lines and alternates among them within single chapters.
