The findings here are as follows: • • • • • Research in infant, primary and secondary schools has recorded an unusually high degree of conflict between white teachers and African Caribbean pupils. School case studies describe processes where, despite their best intentions, teachers’ actions can create and amplify conflict with African Caribbean pupils. In comparison with African Caribbeans, teachers often have more positive expectations of Asians – as relatively quiet, well behaved and highly motivated.

In the body of the chapters there are sub-headings, often printed in capitals, in white on a purple background. In addition, some sentences in the body of the text are picked out for emphasis. In some chapters this is done by printing them in italics in mauve on a white background. The word ‘anti-racism’ has been applied rather loosely and, in many cases, its practical application at the school level is uncertain. Nevertheless, some local authorities and individual schools have worked seriously at developing practical and workable approaches to ethnic diversity. Research shows that the past has produced both failure and success and suggests that there are no easy formulae, but a wide ranging attempt to address ethnicity is long overdue in many schools. 13 The argument presented in this last point is a complex one that, I suspect, may not have been easy for many readers to fully grasp.
