In her critique of social contract theory, Pateman (1989) described the theoretical impoverishment of citizen political rights. Although classical political theory recognizes that humans have natural political rights, these are rights that are always given up to the state through the social contract. Pateman called instead for an understanding of democracy in which citizens can act politically in a manner whereby political rights can be reaffirmed, regained, or strengthened; in other words, she imagined a situation in which political liberties are positive and not just negative (Dietz 1987).
Collins (1998) had a similar perspective: No social theory is inherently dominant or oppositional—these categories gain meaning only in relationship to one another. The oppositional nature of any social theory lies not within the essence of its constructs, paradigms, or epistemology. Instead, the types of socially constructed relations it has with other social theories—themselves representing varying patterns of dominance and opposition to yet other discourses, all changing through time—frame its oppositional practice.
