Can’t have wheat. I’m also allergic to mold, and dust, and formaldehyde. Sometimes when I walk into a mall I get a headache and my nose starts running. I can smell the formaldehyde. If I use strong shampoos my ears get real red and hot and they stay like that for a couple of hours, and I don’t feel well. And if I smell perfume I get a headache real bad and it hurts my stomach. At school I plug my nose when the teachers walk by with perfume on. They clean the floor with stuff that I’m allergic to, so my head hurts all day.
Neither of them are showing any problems with the environment, that I know of. And they’re coming from a home and a life of great strength. They’re going to be way ahead of me. My husband and I both have a real love of nature. We do a lot of skiing, walking, hiking, working in the garden. I spend a lot of time with my family. We play games and read and cook together, get videos. There is one movie theater where I can go. I tend to go off-hours, and if somebody wearing perfume sits next to me, I just get up and move.
It’s a frightening thing when I get hit with that kind of a chemical, which, thank God, isn’t often. That’s when I get scared. For me the thing that works best is hard-core exercise. I get on the exercise bike and get the blood going up to the brain. I think it just cleanses me. Thankfully, I’ve recovered every time. Only a couple of my friends or anyone at work has seen me when I’m hit like that. Usually I operate normally. It’s almost like acting. I’m so used to having my brain get kind of swollen if I get hit by perfume or something, and I know that I’m going to get back to normal within a matter of minutes or hours or even a day after the person leaves.
