Professor Emeritus at Stanford University, Charles A. Ferguson has been at the heart of linguistics for fifty years. His research spans the areas of South Asian linguistics, Arabic linguistics, child language, the language spoken to children and foreigners, language and religion, sociolinguistics, and language universals.
My academic friends were displeased by this apparent betrayal of academic loyalties, but it was a wonderful opportunity for me and I never regretted the decision. It was the second point in my career where a Page 17 lucky possibility opened up and I was able to respond.
