CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT Alexander Isaiah Cross is the main character and the protagonist or hero of this novel. He is both well-rounded and dynamic, since we know a good deal about him—more than any other character in the book—and there is evidence that he changes in the course of the novel. Cross was 32 James Patterson orphaned when he was nine years old and then was taken in by his grandmother, whom he always refers to as Nana Mama, since she was (and is) both mother and grandmother to him. He has two brothers who were placed with other relatives, and he seems to have no contact with them, nor does he appear to want to have such contact, although no reason is given for this.
