Even my friends were telling me that what I was trying to do just couldn’t be done. But I knew in my bones that if we could just find some more investment capital, we could get SONG back on its feet and find new 34 E C O V I L L A G E AT I T H A C A potential residents. And then, just as I was in despair not only over our finances but also over our very future, Chuck Mathei came to Ithaca. THE EQUITY TRUST FUND Chuck Mathei was the director of Equity Trust, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to encourage the formation of community land trusts (CLT).

The timing obviously wasn’t right. Still I couldn’t shake my attraction. Meanwhile a lot happened during the nine months it took to put our financing in place. In January 1992 EVI received nonprofit status, held its first Annual Meeting, and elected a Board of Directors to conduct the organization’s business. Then in March 1992 our cohousing group held its first meeting, as 50 people crowded into the large living room of one couple’s home in Ithaca. There were only a few cohousing communities in the country at that time, and none of us had ever seen one.

We set up a semicircle of chairs in front of the large group — one seat for each of the interest groups, plus one representing economics and affordability. As facilitators, Jay and I added a fun touch: Each member of the “fishbowl” received a hat labeled with the name of their interest group. Then, whenever a member of the audience wanted to chime in, he or she would simply replace the member of the fishbowl by literally putting on the right hat. People were totally engaged in the process, and I couldn’t believe how well the weekend was working!
