Today, I add an extra layer to the recipe for reclaimed earth—one thin page of wet rejection between lime and cow dung. I put my back into it, pitching my fork into the half-cooked pile on my left, turning it over on top of the new pile in front of me, sweating and straining with righteous purpose. A leathery orange rind almost makes me cry. I toss the dried-up peel on top of the mound. I get a rhythm going: stab, lift, pitch, stab, lift, pitch. After a half hour of thrusting, twisting, and tossing, I’m not burying my ego any more; I’m turning the compost heap.

When my words were met with eruptions of laughter, it felt like cool breezes were suddenly rising up all around me, lifting my spirits and boosting my confidence, word by word, until I finished reading and the room burst into a shower of applause and cheering.
