The gases form a cloud around the nucleus called the coma. The fly-by timeline includes a series of critical events, culminating with closest approach - expected at 20:58 CEST, 5 September 2008. A sort of trial-run of such a technique was done successfully when the Deep Impact impactor ran into the nucleus of comet Tempel 1 (for scientific purposes discussed in a later section ) in July 2005. I imagine some readers will know some of these, and some will know all ten, but if you do you can still enjoy the pretty pictures — and make sure you click on them to embiggen ’em.

Congress directed NASA to conduct workshops on how potentially threatening asteroids could be detected, and how they could be deflected or destroyed. They are known as Earth-crossing asteroids and comets. They are easily influenced by the gravity of nearby planets, and so many of the cometary nuclei that exist in the Kuiper Belt and Oort Clouds were "slingshotted" out to those regions after gravitational interactions with the gas giants (which also migrated out to their present positions).

You might also have noticed the extensive coverage recently of the Planetary Defense Conference, which was held in April and featured in 3 Planetary Radio episodes. Solar flares and radiation storms can damage silicon brains and electronic guts almost as badly as their organic counterparts. Notice in the left image the three bright stars making up the "belt".
